Peru Night

We made some homemade chili and had fun with the Branch celebrating South America!

It was a really good week

so in advance the shift button is broken on this computer so i am just not even going to try to use it

as for my week this was a really good week. avram has accepted a baptismal date for september 22. we are meeting with him today and may move it up. he accepts everything that comes out of our mouths. it is really cool. we had a lesson with him and watched the restoration video with him. he loved it! we didn't plan to give him a date but i quickly went over some of the commandments and he said all was good. he said he drinks green tea. i told him we could help him quit. he looked up and said brother you don't need to help me i done with it from now on. it was super cool so we extended a date and he accepted it. he came to church yesterday and again really enjoyed it. i like hannah also spoke yesterday at church. it went alright.

as for pavel he is doing really good. we fasted with him on sunday for an answer. he came to church and we set up with him for tomorrow. we are hoping to pick a date with him as well. he is totally ready to be baptized.

we also had victor come to church. he said he would only come to 2nd hour because he has another church at our time but he came to first hour as well. he enjoyed it and really liked talking to all of our members. he had a really good conversation with the wife of our branch president. hopefully things will continue to progress there.

so really fast a lot of you asked about what was peru night. in short we did a skit where we were from spain and we landed in south america and they thought we were gods so they wanted us to grow plants for them or they would kill us. we didn't know what to do so we ate a burrito and the beans fell out and while we slept they grew. so then they didn't kill us. haha it was pretty funny.

as for elder young he is really cool. it will be a fun opportunity to serve with someone from my district.

well that was it for my week. thanks for the great letters. it is so much fun to hear from all of you!

District Leader in Cherkassy - very humbling

Hey everyone thanks for the letters this week I got them from Dad, Mom, Johnny, and Melissa. It was fun to hear about the family get together with out me haha. But I am glad you were all able to have fun. So question what is the population of Chicago? Pople have been asking me that all week and I don't know. That is so crazy that Brandon covered 30 wards. We have 6 missionaries in just this tiny branch. haha

So I am just going to start in on my week. It was pretty crazy and shocking. But I want to first ask dad how he works with the Ward Mission Leader. We have an awesome Brother serving right now and he is a really big help. We give him a lot of information right now but I am not sure that it is being passed to the branch President. What type of info do you get from him and what do you do with that info?

This week was cool. Pavel came to church and was on the edge of his seat the whole meeting. He loved it so much. Elder Hilton asked him when he will be baptized and he said he would tell us. We are hoping to set a date tomorow with him for this saturday. We have prayed and fasted and felt that he is the one that the Lord has prepared for us to baptize in August. He is really cool and has come a really long way.

Avram came to the baptism of Katya on Saturday and loved it. He turned to me and asked what he has to do to have that experience. I introduced him to our M.C.M. and they hit it off. Avram has a pretty tough time though.  He woke up at 6 to come to the baptism and then again to come to church. He has no clean water and has to walk 5 miles to get any. Please keep him in your prayers.  This week we are planning on picking a date with him as well. After sacrament meeting he turned to me and said this is so true! He also loves the Book or Mormon. It is super cool.

As for our other investigators not a lot has happened with them. Our miracle from last week, we had to drop his date because he just disapperared. We have been calling him all week and he hasn't answered. Hopfully we will get a hold of him soon. A really cool young man came to gamenight. We had met him on the street and when we said ping-pong he perked up. He is super good haha. But he is really cool and has never really "done" religion before. He took a Book of Mormon and said he would read it.

As for transfers that was the shocking part. On Friday we got a call from president informing Elder Hilton that he will be transfered to Nova D and that he will be District Leader there. He then asked to talk to me. He called me to be District Leader here in Cherkassy. It was a very humbling experience to know that the Lord has so much trust in me. It always seems that as soon as I get "comfortable" in missionary work. i.e. I think I know how to do it. The Lord pushes me even more. I really like this quote from Elder Hilton, "There is no growth in a comfort zone and there is no comfort in a growth zone." So Ya it will be a really cool experience to serve my district even more. I have a really great district. But I am so sad that Elder Hilton is leaving. He has been so much fun to serve with. He is a super good missionary. My new companion is Elder Young. And in fact he was in my district in the MTC. He is a cool Elder from the Marshal Islands. It will be a fun transfer.

Well that is about it for this week. I will put up some more pictures. love you all!

Love Elder Quinn

p.s. we had peru night and it was a big hit. We made Chili and everyone loved it. I have a bunch of pictures from it.

Miracles!

I will start right in. The weather has been super hot lately breaking 100 quite often. But as soon as I wanted to complain about it to you all it cooled off and has now been pretty nice so ya I can't complain bummer haha. This next week I get transfer info. It is so weird how fast this transfer has gone. I really hope to being staying with Elder Hilton. He has been really fun to serve with. I have been really blessed with awesome companions so hopefully it keeps t up.

So this week has been an amazing amount of miracles. First of all I went on exchanges up in Kiev with the Zone Leaders because Elder Hilton is District leader. Elder Peterson and I were together and we went to an active family to teach them. They had a daughter who was about 25 and she had just gotten back from the big Ukrine youth conference. It was really big it had youth from 5 missions there. But anyways I asked if she met anyone form Illichovsk and she said she met Anya, Vova, and Alyosha. It was so cool to hear that Vova went also that Alyosho went.  I was so happy to hear about it.

Second miracle was on Thursday we went to clean the windows of the church. At the end of it Sergei walked in. We had a lesson planned for 5 but he came to tell us that he wanted to do it early and he felt that we would be here. It was cool. He accepted a soft baptismal date and he said "If I receive an answer and not get baptized that would be foolish." It was really nice to hear him say that. He is good guy and can really remember what we talk about which is cool because a lot of people don't understand the concept of an Apostasty.

Miracle number three. Thursday night I contacted this guy named Igor. He said he was hurrying but turned to Elder Hilton and said in two words or less tell me what the standards of the youth today should be. He quickly told him about the Word of Wisdom and Law of Chastity. We got his number and I gave him a 13 articles of Faith pass-along card. We usually wait until the next day to call people but we called him that night. He told us to call the next morning. Then he said he would call us. So we figured oh one of those people. But he called us and set up for thirty minutes later. We ran to the church and had an amazing first lesson. He said that last night he couldn't stop thinking about us. He herd a voice say "If you meet with them all of your questions will be answered before the New Year." It was so cool. We gave him a date for September 15th and he accepted. He then went on to say the best closing prayer I have ever heard an investigator say. He thanked the Lord for having us meet and asked that we could continue to meet. After the prayer we looked up and he was flexing and leaning back. Elder Hilton asked how he felt and he said "Amazing! I just spoke to my Heavenly Father." It was so cool.

Miracle Number four. On our way to the lesson previously mentioned a guy named Avram contacted us. He started out with I am a believeing person and I know the Prodoslyvian church isn't true. He is from Armania and how amazing is it that we have two Armanian copies of the Book of Mormon in our apartment that we were supposed to give to other missionaries but we ended up not being able to so they got them from somewhere else. He called us Sunday morning and said he will try to come to church. He lives out in a village and the busses don't have a rugular bus schedule on Sundays. Unfortunately he couldn't come.

Quick finish up with two funny stories. We went to a "Mexican" resturant this week to get burritos. It was aweful. They gave me a burrito without any meat but with mushrooms. Ukrainians really need to figure out how to make Mexican food. Also we had game night and this old member came. He is so good at Ping Pong. I was on his team and he kept yelling at me to play better. At one point he took my paddle, put his down, and showed me how I should hit the  ball. It was so funny!

Kirall so happy to be baptized

Kirall with the Elders
The water doesn't look very good

Part of our Branch

We made some banana bread and gave it with a Book of Mormon

As for my week a lot happened. Elder Hughes and Elder Walker who Elder Hilton and I trained came back to do deregistration for Elder Walker as he took my place and I took his. Luckily I don't have to go back to Illichovsk to deregister. Although it would be fun to go back down there. But Natalie asked a good question of whether or not I can write to people I have met on the mission. I can, I send a letter to Vova down with Elder Hughes. Also he had brought me a couple of gifts from the memebers so I sent a thank you note for them. If the plan is still to have mom and dad pick me up then that is where we will go to church. :)

Now I will do a funny story and end with the spiritual ones. So Sister Chang met some guy who was drunk but wanted to meet so she passed him to us. We called him and again he was drunk but he really wanted us to come over. We told him to sober up and take a nap and we will be over in a couple of hours. I felt super good about going over because I thought it was his Spirit trying to get a hold of the truth while his body was intoxicated. So we went over and got into his front yard thrugh a gate. We should have left the gate open haha. Here is the conversation. He spoke in English and I spoke in Russian. Me: How are you. Him: bad. Me why. Him I am an alchoholic. Me well we can help you overcome that. Him I want to be.... to be sister Chang. Me wait what? To talk with her or to be her? Him she is beautiful. Elder Hilton let's go. We start to leave and he grabs my shoulder and says "No brother wait I am sorry" We quickly got through the gate and walked away but he starts to follow us so we start to run then he runs. Luckily he was still a little drunk so he gave up after a minute. It was so funny/creepy. We told the sisters that they aren't allowed to go to that area anymore.

Now for a spiritual story. Karil was baptized and confirmed this past weekend. It was so cool to see him and see how excited he was. He could barely sit down. Yesterday he also received the Aaronic Priesthood. He is so excited to pass the sacrament. He is a super good kid I am really happy for him. As for our other investigators. It was a tough week. P..... is still in Turkey but gets back this week which is good. We are hoping to set a date with him this week. I really want it to happen because he and Elder Hilton are really good friends And I want Elder Hilton to be here. We met with V...... and he has finally understood the Apostasy. People just don't get it. When we tell them that the authority of God was taken from the Earth and then restored through Joseph Smith. They think that that is how our church got our authority and that theirs got it from somewhere else. Finally he asked so wait my baptism didn't mean anything? And Elder Hilton and I were like yes but now you have a chance to be baptized by proper authority. He said "Ok now I understand why your messgae is so important." So that was a good turning point. We found one investigator this week his name is Sergei. We met him on the street and he said can we meet in 45 minutes at your church. He came we taught him the first and then he set up with us for the next day. It was pretty cool but his Russian isn't so good. He perfers Ukrainian so we had to work around that. But ya that's it for our teaching pool right now. We have a couple more but they can't meet with us for various reasons.

But one last super cool story. There is this lady who gardens in front of our apartment building. We have become good friends with her as we help weed sometimes. We came back from running and had a 45 minute conversation with her. We were a little late to personal study. Whoops. haha but we found out she has been to our church. So the next day we made some Bannana bread and left it at her door with a Book of Mormon. We came in from running this morning and she was out and called us over and said "Thank you so much for the book, I will read it. And you guys should come over on Saturday I feel like we should talk about this." It was awesome. Her name is Alla.

Well I love you all so much.

Love Elder Quinn
